Geirionydd Shafts (Trefriw) Empty
PostSubject: Geirionydd Shafts (Trefriw)   Geirionydd Shafts (Trefriw) I_icon_minitimeTue 24 Feb 2009, 7:07 am

Location
SH 765 618

Directions
There is a public car park at Llyn Geirionydd which is reached from a really awkward B route from Betws Y Coed. If you park here you need to then walk the length of the lake to it’s north point and come off the main footpath and follow a secondary path running parallel and to the left. The shafts are a couple hundred feet from the north tip of the lake.

Alternatively, walk up from the Klondyke lead mine (up along the stream) and you will come across the shafts a couple hundred feet before you arrive at Llyn Geirionyndd.

Access
Ungated & open. Permission unknown but thought not to be required.

Suggested Equipment
None

Length
100-150 feet

Flood risk
None known.

Mine Attributes
Probably a lead mine but fool’s gold (iron pyrites) has been found in the spoil. Requires a scramble at the entrance.

Description
This mine is marked on the O/S map as “shafts” but this is incorrect.

In fact, this is more of a vein that was exposed to the surface and has been mined away creating a narrow(ish) rift. There are several points where this is exposed to the surface and these could probably be mis-undersatood to be “shafts”.

Entry requires a scramble down about 20 feet but is fairly straight forward.

Once “in”, you will find yourself in a roofless passageway with three adits, all of which are short but two of which are fairly ornate.

Worth a look if you are there but not worth a trip ion it’s own right as you will have seen everything within 10 minutes.

This mine is in close proximity to the Klondyke Lead mine.

Digs
None known.
