White Quarry Caves Empty
PostSubject: White Quarry Caves   White Quarry Caves I_icon_minitimeFri 03 Apr 2009, 9:55 am

Location
SJ 167 759

Directions
Marked on the O/S map as “Quarry (dis)”

At Pantasaph, take the road to Brynford. Just before the wide sweeping bend that takes you over the A55 there is a public footpath on the left (recessed gate). Take this footpath across the field and it forks left & right – take either as they both swing around to the quarry. The incline is found by taking the right path and the caves below are oriented from there.

Access
Unknown but all ungated

Suggested Equipment
None

Length
None known to be longer than 100 feet but there is potential for more if dug

Flood risk
None known

Cave Attributes

A number of caves exposed by the quarry. Short in the main but phreatic in some cases in nature. Some low & tight crawls. Some grottos and virtually featureless.

Description
Cave #1
A “slit” in the rock at the high side of the ramp down into the quarry on the left (as you go down). The slit extends inwards only a short distance but also drops down directly under the ramp (tight) to an unknown depth and unknown passages.

Cave #2
A belly crawl located near the base of the ramp on the left as you walk down. This crawl is around 12 feet in length before it tapers to a too narrow crawl. An old iron bar was found in here and it appears that someone may be digging further in as the crawl is silted.

Cave #3
A small slit in the ground on the right side of the ramp (as you walk down). This appears to drop into a small chamber around 20 feet below. It is not known if any passages run off form there but given the cave is water formed it seems more than likely that water was flowing out of that chamber at one time. Investigation needed.

Cave #4
Found by going down the ramp and looking backwards to the right (the first cave in the right hand wall of the quarry). This cave has a reasonable entrance but does not go in more than around 10 feet until it is blocked. This is a potential dig.

Cave #5
Moving along the quarry wall (in the same direction of the ramp) another cave can be found behind some bushes. This is very small but potentially diggable.

Cave #6
This cave is further along the quarry wall and has a very good sized entrance. The passage way quickly tapers down to an awkward crawl including an “S” bend which must be negotiated on your side with no room to turn around once passed. Beyond this, the passage continues for another 20-30 feet of crawl able passage until it becomes too tight.

The passage is glacially silted and is a prime candidate for a dig.

Cave #7
Located a good way further along the quarry wall and up around 30-40 feet (easy scramble) and totally concealed by a small bush in front of the entrance is another cave.

This is the most interesting cave ….

A small entrance leads into a small chamber. Here there is a short, spiral crawl downwards to hole in the wall (water formed). This hole is small but was just passable with a tight squeeze (small person ~ chest size 40+ need not apply!). Beyond the hole is another chamber which is small but you can stand in (a couple of adults). Here there is a passage leading off but it is glacially silted and gooey. Antoher potential dig that looks promising.

Cave #8
A little further along still, there are two caves (one immediately above the other) in the rock face. The lower one is nothing more than a traditional Hobbit hole while the upper one drops into a chamber with no passages. They do not connect although they are in very close proximity.

Cave #9
Within the quarry behind the main quarry (go back up the ramp and turn half left). In the far corner, there is another cave. This is partly hidden by bush and does not extend more than 10 feet. Again, it is silted and potentially digable.

Unexplored Passages
The drop in Cave #1 remains unexplored
The chamber drop in cave #3 remains unexplored
Everyhting that was silted and requires a dig

Digs
None known but most caves are silted and show potential for digging.
